Subject: Race Week J-105 Style 2006

Preparations are nearing completion to assure that we all have the "Sailing Vacation of the Century".

We have eight J/105 in our own one design class start. Some of these boats have been freely donated by the owners (who unfortunately can't attend) as rewards to their crews.

Crews have been recruited from near and far to staff the boats as needed. We have many more "wanna be J/105 crew" patiently waiting for an open position.

We have assembled an entire "university" to encourage comradeship and to assure that training, counseling, humor and general support are available to anyone who may need it for any reason.

Our Cafe 105 will be opening on F dock to assure that all are adequately nourished, refreshed and have the opportunity to get better acquainted.

We are all set for our giant BBQ on Tuesday evening.

Did we miss anything?

Are you pumped yet?

Did I mention that we have a class start? Did I mention that eight is a new record for J-105's at Race Week?

Thanks to all for your support of

The Northwest J/105 Fleet is “pulling out all of the stops” to assure that this year’s Race Week will be the best ever. One aspect of that is to get at least ten J/105’s to Oak Harbor. At this point, a couple of boats are not able to make it solely due to lack of crew.

If you or anyone you know has a desire to crew on a J/105 at Race Week please have them contact me or Carol Reid at 206 286 1004 and we will put you in touch with the skippers looking for crew.

At this point we have two maybe three “hotel boats” planned so you may be able to bunk on one of those. There is also the famous “Breakwater Suites” with guaranteed “Wave Action” at least one night of the week (lets us know if you need a tent).

All sailors are welcome to our dock party BBQ on Tuesday evening and all JBoat sailors are welcome to Sail Northwest’s fabulous dinner party at the yacht club on Wednesday evening. Both of these events are free.

Remember that the J/105’s are the best most competitive boats at race week and the entire fleet is focused on making sure all sailors have fun on and off of the water.

Never sailed a J/105? No sweat, we have crew manuals as well as CD training guides. Just ask.

Mark your calendars for July 16th to the 21st. Can’t make it for the full week? We can work with that as well.

Hope to see you at Race Week on a J/105!

Subject: Are you ready for a J-105 Summer?

Our sailing has been great but we are going through J/105 One Design withdrawal. PSSR seems a distance memory.

Not to worry, J/Fest is approaching on June 16th & 17th with a great kick off party at CYC the evening of the 15th. This is the "granddaddy" of all of the J/Fest events. "J/Fest roots go back over two decades to Seattle, WA where J/Boat owners & J/Rep Bob Ross decided to get everyone together for a fun weekend they labeled J/Fest. A tradition born, the festivities have continued each year since and morphed into a full blown regatta series with five primary venues. Thanks to some great volunteers and sponsors, the fun continues in 2006." http://www.jfest.org/seattle.htm

At this point Carol has entries for six boats; Dulcinea, Jaded, Jambo (Paul Malmo’s inaugural one design race), Last Tango, Panic and Sunday Ticket. We are still excepting Bifrost III, Jubilee, Life Is Good, and Xtreme (with potential owner Jay Leon). This would give us ten boats and would be a great way to welcome Paul and Jay to the best sail boat racing in the northwest. If for some reason you are not able to race feel welcome to stop by CYC’s clubhouse Friday, Saturday or Sunday evening for some great J/105 camaraderie.

We had five boats in the Leukemia Cup "Fun Race". By the posted results Jambo, Last Tango and Panic were in the "cruising class" while Jubilee and Life Is Good were in the "racing class". Life Is Good was chartered by the Vindicator J/105 #649 team from Illinois. By their website, http://www.vindicatorracing.com/news.asp?news=06seattleLCR they finished first. We were busy "cruising" with Last Tango and Jambo so we will leave it to Erik and the Jubilee team to confirm. I understand some of the Vindicator team was made up of local family and we are working on getting them to come out and play more often. Marcus and Rick, thanks for coming to town and showing us the way around Elliot Bay. By the way, did we get a chance to tell you about Oak Harbor yet?

Speaking of Oak Harbor! Speaking of Summer! Think ten or more J/105's. Think five days of the best summer sailing on the planet. Think seven or eight days of the best camaraderie and corinthian spirit. Think J/105 One Design! Think Whidbey Island Race Week 2006. http://www.whidbey.com/raceweek

Thanks for supporting the best sail boat racing in the Northwest.

Subject: Spring Sailing J-105's

Panic has recently turned down three good crew for J-Fest; Dave, Kathy (Kat) and Park are all excellent sailors and are all looking for a J-Fest ride. We are full. Please contact them if you need crew for J-Fest or possibly other races.

Seems the word continues to spread that the J-105 fleet is the "best racing around".

Thanks to Geoffrey we recently have launched a website http://www.j105.org/fleet20. Check it out ("Control + Click"). We may soon have a "crew wanted / crew available" page. Let us know if you would use it and if there are any concerns with posting contact information.

By the way who all is doing J-Fest?

Thanks for your support.

The weather has been great. I hope you have been enjoying your boats.

Nine J-105's were in the Sloop Tavern's Race to the Straits. We missed it but I am sure it was fun. As I understand the scores, Sunday Ticket was first with Jaded second and Last Tango third. Congratulations to all. The only one design class in the race, how cool is that!

Bifrost 3 was the lone J-105 in the Seattle Yacht Club's Double Bluff [Ed. actually, Smith Island!] race. They won the class. Congratulations to Mike and crew!

It looks like Xtreme and Last Tango have been representing the fleet for the CYC Wednesday nights. I am sure they would like some company.

Speaking of CYC, tonight at 7:30 (bar opens at 7:00) is a presentation on Swiftsure "Winning Swiftsure:

Tactics and Preparation. Shilshole Clubhouse. Speaker is Bruce Hedrick, Northwest Yachting Magazine". This is open to all.

On Swiftsure, we have three boats entered in the Cape Flattery Race; Bifrost 3, Moonglow and Panic. Sunday Ticket is in the Clallam Bay Race. Panic will be hosting "social hours" Thursday afternoon on the boat, stop by for snacks and beverages. If you can't make it then, we will generally be "open for business" from Wednesday late afternoon till Friday evening, stop by any time. We hope to be parked on the main dock, look for the J flag or our battle flag.

Last Tango and Panic are doing the Leukemia Cup on June 3rd. This is a fun race sailed under the "Relaxed Rules of Sailing" and supports a good cause. Both boats have room if you would like to sail with us, contact JP or me. I would guess that some other J-105's will also be doing it.

Carol has sent out notices for J-Fest (June 17th & 18th) and Race Week (July 16 to 21). These are "must do" J-105 events as they count toward our season championship and are also a ton of fun. Make sure they are on your calendar!

Start planning for Race Week early; we need ten boats for a class start. We put on the best dock party on earth Tuesday evening and Bob and Carol have the great J Boats party on Wednesday. Not to forget the best sail boat racing for five days straight. Start getting in shape now!

Rumor has it that Jaded and Sunday Ticket are venturing to Marina Del Ray in late August for the J-105 North American Championships. Let's wish them both good luck. Better yet, rumor also has it that several others who can't get their boats there will be going down to root them on, this sounds like a very cool way to spend a August afternoon.

We are starting to get a rather large informal "crew pool" of J-105 sailors. Let us know if you need crew. This would be a great reason to launch our website. We have space reserved on the national site, all we need is to tear someone away from their boat long enough to make it happen. Then again, since these are J-105's that we sail year around we may need to wait for the website.

Hope to see some of you in Victoria and all of you at J-Fest.

Ahoy Sailors!
...
Our season gets underway with a bang in March with season championship races on the 4th, 11th and 25th as well as April 8th and 9th. Mark your calendars!

As Gerald indicated when he sent out our rules for this season "The most important thing right now for our fleet is to just come out and show up! We are just on the verge of cementing our position as the best one-design racing on Puget Sound. Don't get bogged down by excuses and nagging details, just drag your boat to Shilshole on the 4th and let's sail around the sound. Blakeley Rock's is a total blast of a race."

If you need any help getting your boat or crew ready "Just Ask". If you know of anybody that would be interested in crewing let us all know.

Panic is doing the Snowbird race this Saturday. If anybody would like a ride please join us at Shilshole dock L31 at 10:00 am. Better yet, bring your boat and crew for a 2 to 3 hour tune up race. JP will be heading up the Race Committee so let him know if you want to sail.

By the way the Seattle Yacht Club will be hosting Dave Perry, a "rules expert" on Friday evening March 3rd. Contact Bruce Campbell at bandbcampbell@msn.com for more information. We can never be too informed on the rules, hope to see you there.

The magazine 48 Degrees North will be honoring three of our boats that made the "Top 25 for 2005" at the CYC clubhouse after the March 4th race, even if you can’t make the race come afterwards for some "J/105 beer" and enjoy the ceremony with us.

I noticed that only eight owners have joined the national class for 2006. I am hoping that every boat that races will join the national class. Additionally, if someone other than the owner will be driving for any of the races; it would be great if the driver joined as an associate.

Hoping for 12 boats on the line for the first Center Sound race, Blakely Rocks on March 4th. Panic will be there, let us all know who else will be.

If anybody would like to "host" a get together either on the docks or elsewhere, let us know.

Thanks for supporting the best sailing on Puget Sound!

Subject: J-105 Fleet Meeting 12-8-05

We had a great turnout for our annual awards meeting on December 8th..

Gerald Hirschler’s Jaded won our season championship.

Two new owners, Mathew Gardener-Brown and John Weil were introduced.

We learned that long time local J-105 sailors Lynn & Linda Adkins will be selling Mudlark and bringing the first J-124 to the area. Hope to continue to see them on the water and we are inviting them to part take in any J-105 activities as well.

Fleet officers for next year were elected; Gerald Hirschler as Fleet Captain, Erik Kristen as Measurer and Chuck Stephens as Secretary.

The executive committee for 2006 will consist of the officers and Bob Ross of Sail Northwest.

There was lots of good discussion regarding our rules for next year. Gerald and team will be working on a rules proposal to present to all members.

Nelson from the national class would like to remind all that there are two upcoming J/105 North American Championships on the west coast; 2006 in Marina Del Rey and 2008 in San Francisco. There should be boats available to charter.

I would like to add that it is now time to join (or renew) the national class. Membership will likely be required to score next season. Go to www.j105.org.

Hope to see you all at our next meeting, details to follow.

Please share this with any one interested in J/105’s that I may have missed.

Let me know if you would like to be removed from the email list or if there are others that we should add.

Thanks for supporting the best sailing on Puget Sound!
